individuals > sustainable happiness programme The Problem One minute everything's going well for you. You're on top of the world, head bursting with the wonderful things people are saying about you. And the next minute, day or week, you're slipping back down the slope and there's a voice inside your head saying, 'Told you so'. We've created a myth in Western society that such a rollercoaster of happiness is acceptable. Worse, that this is actually desirable. The reasoning goes like this: "without experiencing the lows, how can we experience the highs?" or, "I like my downs, they show me I'm human. If I got rid of them I'd be like a robot!" We even kid ourselves, "my life's nice and stable, it's all in order, I don't need to rock the boat, thanks." which to the trained eye reads: "happiness is too much effort, I give up."
